Q: What is the minimum rental period?

A: It varies. The norm is that, where billboards are existing structures, clients can rent the space for a month of they want, and if it is available. In the case of a new site, the billboard will be constructed and erected once the 1st advertiser is secured. In this case, the billboard owner will stipulate a minimum rental period of 12 months or longer. In my experience, 6 or 12 month agreements tend to have a more defined impact on target audiences, and it must be a very specific campaign for a niche market, or high number of billboards must be rented to make a campaign shorter than 6 months successful.

Q: How long before a campaign start date can I start booking sites?

A: Two to three months. Two months before a campaign start date, we should know which sites has become available due to clients not renewing, or new site releases onto the market.

Q: Can I re-use the artwork once the campaign is finished?

A: If it is printed on a flex-face material, you can re-use it, if the frame size matches precisely and if it is not damaged during de-flighting. Self-adhesive vinyl cannot be re-used as it is destroyed on removal. Prints that have been exposed outdoors for long periods of time will start to deteriorate, and only on de-flighting, can one asses if it can be re-used or not. There are no guarantees!

Q: Do I have an option to renew my advertising once the campaign has finished?

A: As a rule, we encourage our clients to include an option to renew in their written agreements, thereby leaving the option open to them. There is a two to three month notice required before the end of the agreement, by which date the client must give a final answer as to their wish to renew or end the agreement. This will then leave enough time for the site to be re-released onto the market, so that it can be re-sold at the time of the end of the client’s agreement.

Q: What is the opportunity for discount?

A: All billboard owners structure their prices differently. Based on our knowledge of the market, supply and demand, and relationships with the various billboard owners, discounts will be calculated and offered. Factors encouraging discount would be a long term bookings, or multiple sites booked from one supplier.

Q: What is the additional cost apart from the media rental?

A: The cost of designing the ad, as well as the cost of printing the ad to the full size of the advertising space, and the cost of the specialised installation team to install the full sized artwork onto the advertising structure. All 3 these costs vary depending on the site’s size and location.

Q: Do I have to supply the print ready design, or can that be arranged?

A: Should you not have a design team, we can refer you to qualified designers with experience in design for out-of-home advertising. Please note that this is VERY different than designing for print and electronic media!

Q: Can I have the ad printed by one of my own suppliers, and supply the printed ad to the billboard owner?

A: Yes, absolutely, but please check with us first that the standards of substrate and printing quality is adhered to, to make sure the print will withstand outdoor conditions. Some billboard owners insist on using their own printers, but their prices are normally highly competitive. Also remember that there will be a cost for the installation of the advert.

Q: What will happen if my ad is obscured during the rental period, or the illumination fails?

A: Written agreements should include a clause covering a client in this event, giving a rebate for the number of days of non-exposure, or a percentage discount for non-illumination.

Q: How long does it take from finalising which ad spaces I want to rent, to getting the ads up on the sites?

A: Once the written agreement is signed and a print-ready disc received from client, it should not take longer than 10 working days to get the ads up on the billboards. This will vary based on time of year and size of the holding rented.

Q: Can I change my artwork during my rental term?

A: Yes, you are the client renting the ad space, which also gives you the right to change artwork. There will be a design, print and installation cost for each artwork change.
